Seventeen Republican House lawmakers are backing a resolution that supports action on climate change. Despite traditional GOP hostility to the issue, the move makes political sense, according to one of the bill’s sponsors. “The polling is very clear,” says Representative Carlos Curbelo (R-FL). “A clear majority of Americans understand that this is a challenge we're facing. When you look at younger voters, the numbers are staggering. I've seen polling where over 80 percent of millennial voters consider this a major priority for them.”
It also may be a bigger issue to the GOP base than many suppose. Polling done by RFF in conjunction with Stanford University and the New York Times has found healthy support for action on climate among self-identified Republicans and independents.
