Today marks 10 years since the Deepwater Horizon disaster, the largest and most environmentally catastrophic oil spill of all time. The accident killed 11 workers, poured over 3 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, and polluted over 1,300 miles of shoreline. In the aftermath of the spill, a bipartisan presidential commission tasked RFF with conducting a series of studies to inform their investigation and recommendations. As part of that commission and in subsequent studies and magazine articles, RFF scholars reflected on lessons learned and recommended policies to mitigate the risks of similar disasters unfolding in the future.
As the world reflects on progress made over the last decade and considers what more needs to be done to protect the environment, we at Resources magazine offer here a summary of RFF’s work surrounding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
