Since 1900, people and land in cities have more than quadrupled and if present trends continue they will have doubled again by the year 2000. The small change in density reflects the continuing reach of metropolis into adjacent areas and, of course, the ubiquitous automobile. Data, from RFF's Resources in America's Future (Johns Hopkins Press, 1963), use the 1950 Census definition of urban land for 1960 and projections. The general trends are not affected significantly by the change in definition.
